❓ Common Questions

Frequently Asked
Questions

Everything you need to know before your first session of Muscle Stiffness. Our experts are always available to help.

Knee bursitis is inflammation of a small fluid-filled sac (bursa) near the knee joint. The most common type is prepatellar bursitis (in front of the kneecap), causing localised swelling, warmth, and tenderness.

Bursitis affects the bursa (a sac outside the joint), not the joint itself. It causes localised swelling in a specific area, whereas arthritis causes diffuse joint stiffness and pain. Both can occur together.

Not necessarily. Relative rest (avoiding kneeling) is recommended, but maintaining fitness through swimming or cycling is encouraged. Complete rest is rarely needed.

Yes. We guide you through exercises that strengthen the knee without aggravating the bursa. Swimming and cycling are usually well-tolerated.

A cortisone injection may be recommended by your doctor for severe or persistent bursitis. Physiotherapy before and after injection significantly improves and prolongs the benefit.

With physiotherapy, most cases of knee bursitis significantly improve in 6–8 weeks. Chronic or recurrent bursitis may take longer, but the prognosis is excellent with proper treatment.

Mild bursitis can resolve with rest and anti-inflammatory measures. However, without addressing the underlying cause (biomechanics, muscle weakness), it commonly recurs. Physiotherapy addresses the cause.

Septic (infected) bursitis is a medical emergency requiring antibiotics and aspiration. Signs include rapidly increasing pain, intense redness and warmth, fever. Seek medical attention immediately if suspected.
